Autumn- Winter 2021 Trends Report

Ah, Autumn. The crisp cool chill of the morning, the crunching sound of leaves as you walk, and the warm fragrant smell of cinnamon, apple, and spice. All you need is the perfect cozy outfit for the ultimate autumnal aesthetic. Today’s blog post is all about the trends for Autumn/Winter fashion. These trends are all over the A/W runway shows and a sure sign the retailers will be recreating these looks and aesthetics for their shop windows.

I also wanted to mention the research I did for these trends was through Harpers Bazar, Vogue, and looking a luxury retailers + runway shows.

At the bottom of this post will be a shopping widget where you can see some of the affordable options I found of each trend from popular retailers.

Trend 1: Sticking with the Classics
All the trends you know are timeless and never falling out of style - perfect for Autumn. This is those little black dresses, the classic long  trench coats, wool knits, and boots.

Trend 2: Tailored Made
There’s a huge ‘tailored’ style that started trending awhile back and is currently on the runways. From matching pants and blazers, tailored suit coats, pleated paints with silk button down shirts, also don’t shy away from the matching skirt and jacket. The power suits are here.

Trend 3: Apres SKI
Apres ski is an easy and fun look to do in the winter months. Its also a style you will be able to find literally anywhere this winter. From fun knitted pattern sweaters with the indoor or outdoor ski lodge feel. If bright reds and navy blues aren’t your thing - winter whites and soft grays will work well too. Also don’t forget the fun wool ski socks, hats and mitten, and furry slippers are perfectly acceptable for the apres ski look!

Trend 4: Knitwear With A Kick
Knitwear is always in style each winter but this year try grabbing up the balloon sleeve knits or the knits with pomp pomp or sequins. If you’re feeling really brave, a knit midi skirt or pants. That extra kick is hot and trending. Also oversized knit sweaters with leggings and boots. For colors it’s a cross the board from bright jewel tones or dulled down neutrals.

Trend 5: Roaring Cool Girls 20’s
This trend is all about the Roaring 20’s nod but in a cool girl modern take. Flapper style dresses with lace detailing but a ‘cool girl’ leather jacket or biker boots. Fun sequins, pearls, and other details are included. It’s a fun look where you can mix and match eras plus play it up with that 20’s-80’s-90’s rich girl vibe.

Trend 6: Puffers
Puffer coats are here again for 2021. These coats also give a great nod to the ski aesthetic but the difference is any color is acceptable, and the size of the puff is whatever you’re comfortable with - also puffer style handbags are trending too!

Trend 7: Patterns
The patterns for this A/W is bold and commanding attention. From geometric patterns, the apes ski patterns, artistic style patterns that look like a painting, and beautiful autumn/winter florals. From colors for these pattern looks goes across the board from bright jewel tones to dulled down hues.

Trend 8: Dulled Down Colors
Dulled down or “off toned” colors is popular this year on the runways. From Rust Red, Burnt Orange, Faded Mustard Yellow, and Olive-Hunter Green, Dusty Browns, and so on. The faded dulled down colors is a style that also fits great with the dark moody academia look. Layer the textures with leather, knit, suede, and so forth.

Trend 9: Midi
Midi length skirts are once again back and this style is perfect in patterns, knits, and color hues mentioned above. The Midi skirt can be styled in more professional tailored looks or layered in a more 1920’s modest style. My favorite way to wear a midi skirt for Autumn is with a knitted sweater - belted - with a nice pair of dull brown leather knee high boots.

What I Truly Bought From The Nordstrom Sale

The Nordstrom Sale is about to open to the public which is when everything will start selling out - luckily, this year the Sale has constantly had a steady amount of restocks and not a lot of sell outs - there’s still Barefoot Dreams in stock, Spanx Leggings, and the trendy Knee High Boots are still in stock in lots of sizes + colors!

I was of course able to shop the sale early via online (the nearest Nordstrom is 5 hours away) - I was able to purchase 95% of the items I wanted (3 items sold out before I was able - Fendi Sunglasses, Free People Sweater in size XS, and Treasure & Bond $25 hat).

Below is my round up of what I truly purchased from the Anniversary Sale - I’ll also indicate if I kept the item or had to return it (I did sub sizes in a few items I wasn’t sure of).

Also the Shopping Widget houses each exact item - clicking that item and shopping through that affiliate link I’ll make a small commission at NO additional cost to you! It’s how I fund my blogging.

Shop The Post:

A few of these items are actually gifts - the Barefoot Dreams cardigan is for my mom this Christmas along with the perfume that’s in the Donna Karen Deodorant set. All the fashion pieces I’m trying out and not sure how they’ll fit - except the PJ (I’ve owned these pj’s before and highly recommend them).
Currently: Returning the Free People sweater (too big DEFINITELY size down), keeping the Pj’s, keeping the cardigan (tts), floral dress I'm debating on (fits TTS but is a bit long on me - would require heels), and the rest of the fashion pieces haven’t arrived yet.

For accessories most are items I 100% plan to keep. The only items I’m not sure on is the sunglasses; in a previous Nsale I ordered some Quay Sunglasses and they were WAY too big for my head - UPDATE: these arrived 5 minutes before my post launched and sadly I’m returning them (Bryce said they’re way too large and look like cartoon glasses!). I’m also returning the Kendra Scott Earrings, they felt so so SO cheaply made and they made a strange rattle sound every time I would turn my head.

When it comes to the beauty items I’m keeping everything - these are items I’ve had on my shopping list to purchase anyways.

I also ordered 2 of the ankle boots and the mules I only ordered in 1 size UPDATE: Mules fit TTS and I’m keeping! The Marc Fisher boots in the cream white color fits TTS and I’m waiting on the Vince Camuto boots to arrive for comparison. The adidas Luxe sneakers fit TTS but if you go up a half size they’ll most likely still fit; I ordered both 7.5 and 8 - both sizes fit perfectly.

IF YOU WANT TO SEE THESE ITEMS IN PERSON HOP OVER TO MY IG STORIES! I HAVE A HIGHLIGHT TAB WHERE I’LL SHOW ALL THESE PIECES AND MORE DETAILS ON FIT, QUALITY, AND DETAILING. IG: https://www.instagram.com/brittmcadenmills/

The benefit of Nordstrom is its always Free shipping and Free returns. That’s typically why I order multiple sizes and items I’m unsure of - I order anyways because there’s that comfort of their incredible return policy.

I hope this blog post helps you decide what to purchase from the Nordstrom Sale and give you some ideas of what to shop for. If you’re not following my social media pages please do! I plan the second half of this year to get back into doing giveaways and being more active on all my social handles.

Fashion Picks: The first must have is beautiful Autumn floral dresses like this one. It will style perfectly with some of my other Nsale picks too! Also cozy sweaters like this wool + cashmere one from Ridley is great paired with leggings. I’m also a large fan of Free People in the Nordstrom Sale because these tops are flattering for all body types and style well Top Style 1 and Top Style 2. My ‘every year’ fashion purchase is ALWAYS this Nordstrom Brand Moonlight Short Set - there’s lots of color options and different styles from shorts to pants sets. Coats is a huge win in the sale and this plaid coat and this belted trench style coat are both great for a preppy and dark academia style. Lastly, if you can grab a pair of Spanx Faux Leather Leggings in the Nsale its always priced great and styles perfectly all Autumn Winter.

Fitness Picks: This year I wanted to showcase my Fitness picks. IVL Collective fitness is new to the Nordy Sale and this sports bra is under $45 and matching foil leggings is definitely going to sell out. There’s also affordable pieces like this under $15 sports bra and Free People Bike Shorts which comes in lots of color options! Zella Socks is always great to stock up on. I also saw this fitness kit (option 1 and option 2) which is great to give as a holiday gift and a must for any at home gym. You can never go wrong with some of the cozy sweatshirts to wear on cool morning runs (this cozy essentials sweatshirt also comes in other colors!). And the yoga mat is in my favorite pattern with more colors to pick from.

Shoes always sell out so so quickly but last year A LOT of shoes came back in stock. These all come in lots of color options and many of these I have in last years style (1, 4, 5, 7 - I have these from last year and all fit TTS). The best part about Nordstrom is Free returns - even online!

My accessories picks are BIG this year. There’s so many great options and luckily many of the styles are similar to last years styles - so if you missed out in 2020, you have a second chance to get those items! I have purchased item #6 in last years sale and it hasn’t faded or tarnished any, definitely a great holiday gift to grab up for a loved one. And item #10 I prefer the high key mini size (there’s 2 lens sizes in the sale this year!).

Baby Picks are always fun to do. I’ll also post over on my LiketoKnowit page boy and girl fashions and baby fashions + outfit ideas from the entire kids clothing sale (so hop over to my LTK page!).
Baby Picks: 1. dark green 1. light green2. boy coat2. girl coat 3. 4. 5. girl walking sneaker 5. boy walking sneaker6. succulent blanket6. geometric pattern blanket

Beauty in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is always a great time to grab up early holiday gifts. Many of these are in custom gift sets that are already deeply discounted or in jumbo sizes that are cheaper than the regular size bottles! All the picks in Beauty I already own and use. I highly recommend all these items and will show these items over on my Instagram Stories during the sale in (it’ll be saved in the Nordstrom Highlight over on my IG Feed).

The Home Sale is an area many grab up gadgets to elevate and update their home. Also the cult classic Barefoot Dreams blankets which always sell out super fast. This year Dyson vacuum set is new to the sale and will be a smashing hit at its deeply discounted price. Also loving these indoor garden kits where you can grow herbs in your kitchen for a ‘outdoors - in’ type of feel (plus a great activity for the kids!).

New Wardrobe 2021: Fashion Haul 1

For 2021 one of my goals is a new wardrobe that is more ‘me'. I’ve been purging my old clothes (some clothes I pulled out of my closet is from 2008!!!!) and preparing my newly renovated closet for some fresh fashion pieces.

I will say my wardrobe is beyond embarrassing. I’ve been showing my closet purge on my IG stories (I saved the video clips in a highlight if you want to go look). For someone with a Fashion Degree and LOVES style in I was a little girl; my wardrobe didn’t speak to that AT ALL. I do believe I know the reason why my wardrobe is literally a train wreak - after having Holly I was a bit uncomfortable with my new ‘post’ figure - in fact at one point I wouldn’t even look at myself in the mirror because I was unhappy with myself. We were also living in a small apartment and I was at home 24/7; therefore I never went out and never invested in a new style; plus any extra money I had went into baby items or I would (regretfully) buy fast fashion items instead of investing in quality pieces. December 2019 we moved into our new home and the goal was ‘A new wardrobe for 2020’ but covid happened. Everything was put on hold but now that I’m 100% confident in myself and my new journey with liketoknowit; I’m finally able to make enough money to pay bills and afford my new wardrobe (in small baby steps; of course!)

For clothing Haul #1 of 2021: I had a $100 gift card to shop at Abercrombie. My total ended up at $200 so the credit card was used but I’m in LOVE with all 5 pieces and beyond thrilled about all the looks I can create with just these 5 items! Below you’ll see images of the new pieces and links to the items PLUS a few more pieces I plan to purchase soon!

* The gift card was a gift from my in-laws*

If you have any clothing brands you’d like to see me try out please leave the brand details in the comments below! I’m always open to trying new clothing brands! On a future post I’ll go more in depth on what I plan to make my new fashion style be.

Don’t forget to follow my Instagram and LiketoknowIt page

My Haul pieces plus a few I plan to get on the next sale!

2021 Fashion Trends

Hello Darlings! It’s a new year and that always entails new fashion trends. I know many of us adore the opportunity for new trends and some of us feel a bit uneasy. The biggest complaint I see about fashion trends is that trends are simply unnecessary. For me, fashion trends isn't “going out and buying a new wardrobe” - that’s a cost I cant afford! Fashion trends in my opinion is the opportunity to take something new, fun, and different into my current wardrobe to give it a fresh look for a small window in time.
My tip is to never invest a lot into ‘trend pieces’ because trends tend to live and fizzle out within 12 months to maybe 3 years. For example the bumbag is all the rage currently but I would NEVER drop 1.6k on the Louis Vuitton one because the trend is set to fizz out within the next year or so. The only time I would invest top dollar into a trend is if I plan to incorporate that trend into my permanent wardrobe or that trend is necessary for my permanent style

I decided today to round up the Top Trends I see for 2021 as well as mention a couple 2021 Trends I WILL NOT be taking part in. Of course, this is my insight on what I believe the trends are from watching the runway shows, what designers on social media are showcasing, and casually shopping online - but the fashion world can (quite literally) change in an instant!
PS: Don’t forget at the bottom of the page will be a carousel of all the items pictured and mentioned on todays post!

Trend 1: Elevated Loungewear

This trend started around Spring 2020 and its definitely paved its way into 2021 as well due to the uncertainty of the global situation. Many of us are working from home OR spending a lot more of our free time at home due to social distancing - therefore the trend of comfy loungewear has became a staple in everyones wardrobe. The difference of 2020 loungewear and 2021 is the luxury designers have created more elevated looks where you can still be comfy-cozy but have the ensemble more structured or coordinated. So think ‘Planned’ loungewear. This could be pieces made of higher quality goods like cashmere or with beautiful detailing like ruffle ankle hems or pearl buttons.

Trend 2: The Bralettes

Bralettes have been a staple in most teen and tween wardrobes but the trend of barrettes is showing up in more mature looks for 2021. These are of course thanks to the loungewear boom of 2020 but for this year you’ll see barrettes styled to be acceptable for both lounging or out n’ about. So think a cashmere bralette with a matching duster cardigan. For me personally, I’m not sure I’ll join this fashion trend and once everything gets back to normal - I feel like this trend will quickly die out.
Trend 3: Sweater Vest
All the cool kids are wearing these sweater vest and I’m personally not brave enough to wear them. In 2020 I noticed the more prep-school ivy league sweater vests but for 2021 the sweater vest has evolved to be more whimsical - you’ll find these with unique knitted details or beadwork. I can imagine these would style beautiful with a highwaist A-line skirt.

Trend 4: Sustainability
This to me shouldn’t be a trend - we should all be doing this all the time. Big designers in 2020 made huge steps in sustainability like up cycling old fabrics to create new styles, bio degradable packaging, recycled coat hangers and more. For us we need to all step up with these fashion designers and start thinking smart for the planet. Luckily there’s countless ways we can. Shop small and local, shop second hand (there’s second hand thrift sites that are incredible + second hand designer websites), and recycle when able and cut out shopping fast fashion.
Trend 5: Monochrome
Monochrome has made its comeback and it’s a total 90’s vibe that is fun, edgy, and bringing back that nostalgic feeling we all love. From black and white patterns or just wearing simple black pants with a white top. I’m seeing Monochrome everywhere from accessories, clothing, and even home decor. So think - black and white chekerboard handbags, black and white houndstooth pattern blouses, or black and white plaid skirts.

Trend 6: All Neutral Tones
Even better is Neutrals are still around and personally, I feel its becoming a classic look that will probably never go out of style. But for 2021 head-to- toe Neutral tone looks are in. This is where you create an entire look (from clothes to accessories) all in similar Neutral colors. Neutrals can range from shades of nude colors, to whites, and even blush pinks.
Trend 7: Historical Shapes
The past few years puff sleeve sweaters and necklines that are echoing a very historical style have been on the scene but for 2021 the dial was turned even more (and I’m all for it!). The 1940’s silhouettes like the ladylike style A-line skirts, button down tops, and elegant trench coats are everywhere. If you need 1940’s inspired clothing ideas look up old Hollywood films!
Also Corset pieces have influenced the runways thanks to the recent tv series we are all streaming. I’m curious to see how many people and brands adopt this unique look.
Along with Historical Shapes the Volume from shoulders, skirts, and feminine style looks is in.
For pants the wide leg Trousers and straight leg Trousers are the new jeans.
Capes are also making a comeback but will probably be more of a focal point in Autumn 2021. These will be very whimsical and countryside style. You’ll most likely see this in outerwear and formalwear. If you want to make a bold fall/winter 2021 statement I highly suggest the Cape trend!

Trend 8: Ladylike Twist
This is a strange but cool trend where you take the pieces that are ultra ladylike (so think that A-line skirt or a soft floral printed dress) and add a twist to it. This can be a leather jacket, combat boots, Chelsea boots, or even twist it up with some bolder accessories.

For Jewelry in 2021 you’ll see a lot more pearls with natural detailing (think oddly shaped natural pearls instead of manufactured perfectly round bleech white pearls)
You’ll also see heavy chain and metal pieces in neckwear and bracelets.

Trends in 2021 I’m not following.
Trend 1: Netting
Netting is everywhere for 2021- this netting isn’t fishnet tights but literally leather shoes with laser netting cut out design or tops and dresses made of a netting style fabric overtop of a slip dress. Its a style I cant envision myself in. * but today I saw one of my favorite IG "secondhand designer resale" pages show a pair of Hermes boots in this design - it was $3k!

Trend 2: All Over Prints
All Over Prints started making its way last year when many designer made their all over logo handbag patterns onto fashion pieces like tops and jackets. For 2021 you’ll see all over prints in suit sets and in dresses with matching overcoats.

Trend 3: Platform Flip Flops
Yes, flipflops with a platform heel. Please don’t get on board with this. Flip flops are for the pool or gym showers only.

Trend 4: Tie Dye

Tie Dye rolled into the scene in 2019 for Coachella and started becoming bigger and bigger in 2020 due to the stay at home/social distancing. Many people found making tie dye as a fun hobby that brought creativity to a boring day. But for me tie dye has become extremely overplayed and is more popular for teen/tweens on ticktock and less for the age 30 and up audience - we should avoid this trend unless we’re attending a Jimmy Buffet beach concert.
